We use the Barton student screening to make this determination. Students who do not pass the screening begin with FIS. Students who pass move directly into Barton. You do not need to figure this out in advance — the screening tells us.

It varies by student. Some children move through FIS in a few months; others take longer depending on where their auditory skills are when they start. Because we are mastery-based, we do not rush. Progress is steady and visible.

A diagnosis alone does not determine the starting point. The Barton screening does. Some students with dyslexia are ready for Barton; others need FIS first. We follow the data, not the label.

All Hammond Bell sessions are conducted online. Sessions are fully live and interactive — not pre-recorded videos or self-paced software. Students work 1-on-1 with a tutor who guides every activity in real time.

Once a student completes FIS and passes the Barton screening, they move into the Barton Reading and Spelling System — a 10-level structured literacy program that takes them from foundational phonics through advanced reading and spelling.
