A different kind of reading help.
Dyslexia is one of the most common learning differences, that needs instruction that works with how their brain processes language.
At Hammond Bell, we provide structured, one-on-one online tutoring grounded in Orton-Gillingham and Barton methods. Our approach is evidence-based, individualized, and designed to build lasting skills, not short-term coping strategies.
Signs of Dyslexia to Watch For
Early identification makes a meaningful difference. Parents and teachers often notice these before a formal evaluation.
Difficulty sounding out unfamiliar words
Letter reversals (b/d, p/q) that persist past the typical age
Slow, effortful reading with frequent loss of place
Strong speaking skills paired with real spelling or writing struggles
Avoidance of reading, or growing frustration with school
Difficulty with number sequences (this can also point to dyscalculia)

Understanding dyslexia, in depth.
What is dyslexia? Dyslexia is a language-based learning difference that affects the ability to read, decode, and spell. It is neurological in origin, meaning it reflects how the brain is wired, not a student's effort or intelligence. Many students with dyslexia show strong reasoning, vocabulary, and problem-solving once decoding demands are removed. It affects the connection between sounds and their written symbols, a process called phonological awareness. Without explicit, structured instruction in this area, students often struggle no matter how much they read on their own.
Types of dyslexia There are several recognized types, including phonological dyslexia, surface dyslexia, auditory dyslexia, and verbal dyslexia. Each presents differently, but all respond to the same foundation: structured literacy.
Dyslexia, IDEA, and Section 504 Dyslexia is recognized as a learning disability under IDEA and Section 504. Students may qualify for formal accommodations in school alongside outside dyslexia tutoring support.
Does dyslexia affect math? Dyslexia can affect math, particularly when it involves reading word problems, following multi-step written instructions, or tracking number sequences. Students may also confuse visually similar digits or hit working-memory limits in multi-step calculations. This is distinct from dyscalculia, which specifically affects number sense and mathematical reasoning. Some students experience both. When math is a significant concern alongside reading, our dyscalculia tutoring support can complement reading intervention.
